The OS map of 1833 showing the site of the proposed new dock to the west of Penath Head nearby Cogan Pill. St. Augustine's church tower, situated on the headland, was for centuries a key navigation landmark for mariners; Penarth Head being the highest headland on the entire Severn Sea and Bristol Channel. The church is indicated on the map just below the "Penarth" legend. Note the extent of the Cogan Pill. The Rivers of Ely and Taff officially flow into the Severn Sea. So the ports of Newport, Cardiff and Penarth enter the Severn Sea whilst Barry enters the Bristol Channel. The boundary being a line extending from Lavernock Head across to Brean on the English side of the channel. [010] |

The map of the Bute estate in 1824. The Cogan Pill forms the boundary between the Parish of Penarth and the Bute estate. In the river Ely, the fishery was let to Nicholas Rimbron for a term of 21 years commencing in February 1824, whereas the tenant at Cogan Pill Farm was Francis Lowe with the same tenancy dates; however, at the Limestone Quarry, James Parry could stay 'at will'.
