c.1864 - Building Penath Dock - the twin coal tips situated on the southern side of the basin. The Customs House is under construction in the left background. I wonder where the smuggler's new retreat will be now they have knocked down the Penarth Head Inn? Answers please, in a sealed bottle addressed to Mutant Dock Rat! [007]

I read an account recently that these two coal tips were relocated from the river Ely Tidal Harbour. Looking closely at this great image of the works in progress it could be correct since the design of the tip mechanisms appear to differ from those in the main dock. The lower image has been colourised.
