| 1865 – The beautiful symmetry and workmanship of the arched masonry quays, 46 feet (14m) tall and 13 feet (4m) thick. The image shows that two of the hoists, referred too as “hydraulic machines” are installed at the quayside. The hydraulic house, complete with chimney, supplied power to operate the hoists, lock gates and coal tips for the entire dock. The 80 ton plunger, or accumulator, is under construction in the hydraulic house. The lower image has been colourised. [007] |
