A set of lock gates under installation in 1865. The lock gates provide a perspective on the size of the works. The workers are dwarfed by the gates of which there were four sets, each being hydraulically operated. The cost of construction of the docks to date was in excess of £750,000. [007]

William Lang (1838-1872) was in 1863 entrusted with the construction of the lock gates based upon the designs of Mr. Hawkshaw. The designs were placed in Mr. Lang’s hands for working out the details, and on the completion of the manufacture of the gates he was further employed in the superintendence of their erection. Altogether this extensive work occupied him more than two years. The lower image has been colourised. [016]
