1865 - A glimpse at the modern age with the docks filling – I wonder what he was contemplating? Note the number of ships at anchor in the sea off Penarth Head all facing the prevailing wind awaiting the signal to enter Cardiff Docks or Ely Tidal Harbour for loading. Maybe some are awaiting the opening of Penarth Docks! The image and enlargements below have been colourised. [025]

On the 2nd June 1865 the Cardiff Times [019] reported : - 'The Opening of the New Dock.- Great preparations are being made for the opening ceremony, which takes place on Saturday morning, the 10th inst., at half-past seven. During the week the finishing stroke has been given to many of the details, and water has been let into the dock for several days past. So far as we are aware the gates and other parts of the machinery work satisfactorily, and there is therefore no doubt of the dock being opened for general trade next week.'

An enlargement of the mid image showing the detail and extent of the construction works. Note the dock gates and the intricate layout of railway communication to the coal tips which are located in an area hewn out of the marls of Penarth Headland. [008]
Another enlargement displaying the wonderful arched masonry of the north quay wall. Tip number 7 is closest, set on the masonry base jutting out into the dock and ready to discharge 8 and 10 ton coal trucks into awaiting ships. Pride in workmanship is the only infectious disease visible at Penarth Dock in 1865! [008]
