Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .
Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - The construction of the dock . . .
A circa 1865 map showing twelve tips and the ballast wharf of the Ely Tidal Harbour plus the Dock and Basin south of the river.
A circa 1865 map showing twelve tips and the ballast wharf of the Ely Tidal Harbour plus the Dock and Basin south of the river. These were the railways, docks and harbours of the Taff Vale Railway Company. Interestingly, the dock is shown with thirteen tips and is extended in length to the 1883 layout. There were only ten tips in the 1865 dock layout. This was possibly an earlier scheme which was not fully realised. [049]

A map indicating that the dock is "in course of construction" which dates the map to between 1859 and 1865. This also indicates more tips and an extended dock so clearly the scheme was curtailed at some point and the extension works had to wait until 1883. (probably as a result of the 1861 dispute between the contractors Messrs. Smith and Knight and the Penarth Co. and the subsequent substantial overrun on costs etc.) Also indicated is the Cogan Pill which was infilled during the original dock construction works thus also indicating a date prior to 1865. The basin layout was amended with the basin entrance and entrance to the dock being somewhat closer to the centreline of the basin than is proposed in this plan. [049]
