1865 - No 11 - Double coal drop in dock. - Tips numbers 2 and 3 were intended to be worked in combination to enable the efficient loading of larger vessels. The fixed centres, however, were not appropriate as the length of ships increased and hatches were placed at differing centre distances. Surprisingly, however, number 3 tip didn't become 'disused' until the GWR era in the 1920's. The houses at the skyline are the rear elevation of the houses of Maughan Street, the houses fronting Paget Road, which was still named Dock Road on the 1915 OS map, having not yet been constructed. The enlargements below have been colourised.
