Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .
Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - The construction of the dock . . .
No 18 - Work in progress outside the sea entrance and inside the dam.
1865 -No 18 - Work in progress outside the sea entrance and inside the dam. - Time and tide wait for no man, hence, it was necessary to build the dock behind a temporary dam. Here, in this busy scene, the navvies build the sea lock using heavy timbers to brace the wall base against the uplift forces of water or, perhaps, localised ground instability. The gantry is used for lifting loads in and out of the lock but I see no S.W.L. (safe working load) displayed! In the distance, under Penarth headland, the construction of the Customs House is also underway and it is already clearly recognisable. I fancy the 'Home cured Gravadlax of Salmon with a Dill Mustard Dressing' to start please! The enlargement below has been colourised. [599] [archive ref : DXPD-6-18] [20170903]
