1880 - Cutty Sark - Report of Survey for Repairs, &c., undertaken by Lloyd's Engineer Surveyor, Mr. William Paulsen during May 1880 at the Canal Dry Dock, London. Her Destined Voyage is listed as Cardiff &c. and her Master is listed as J. Wallace. It was to be his last voyage!
It was a Special Survey the results of which were as follows :
'Vessel placed in dry dock, metal sheathing stripped off ; the timber boards and all ceiling in hold removed ; cargo battens between decks removed ; frames, floors etc examined ; cement tested ; windlass examined ; chain cables ranged on deck ; masts, spars and general equipment examined.
Repairs : - All oxidisation removed off floors, frames, plates and angle irons and recoated with paint or cement. Nearly all the closed ceiling in hold renewed with pitch pine. Renewed mizzen mast with Oregon Pine and mizzen top gallant yard ; caulked topsides and bottom and sheathed with yellow metal on felt as before.
For completion of equipment supplied 45 fathoms additional chain cable, which, it is stated by the owner, were lost in November '78, afterwards recovered and now onboard the vessel.
This vessel is in good condition and eligible, in my opinion, as above stated, to have 2 years added to her character under Table I and 1 year for metal fastenings raising her class to 19A1 viz: Mat.16, C.7.3 - 19 yrs. To be marked : S.S.Lon.80 . H.J.Lon.80. J.X.Y.M.80. W. Paulsen - surveyor to Lloyd's Register of British and Foreign Shipping.
The Committee's Minute of 20th May 1880 : Character Assigned Raised to 19A.1.
Applications having been made for an extension of class, under amended Table I and for metal fastenings : - Found from examinations of the vessel and the 1st entry report, that the timber materials used in her construction are now of the 16 yrs grade, namely bottom planking of Elm (to ⅔ depth of hold) ; remainder of Teak. It is therefore submitted that she is eligible to be allowed 16 years for material, in lieu of 14 years, as at present.
The whole of the external fastenings, from lower part of keel to gunwale, being of yellow metal (except sides of raised quarter deck, which are formed of iron plates) it is submitted that she is eligible to be allowed 3 years for metal fastenings, in lieu of 2 years, as at present. - W. Paulsen.'
