Penarth Dock - 1883
An image from 1883 complete with a colourised version. Coal tip No 10 on the left of the view with the slipway and ship building yard on the river to the rear. Sail is interspersed with steam power. The advantage of steamships is that they could be ballasted with water in lieu of solid ballast. This ensured that as the ship was nearing port, water could be pumped from the holds with the obvious advantage of a quicker turnaround whilst in port. The ship turning in the dock is doing just that. Note the water from her portside. [027] [026]
