Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - The dock extension of 1883 . . . "Penarth - Accident at the Dock Extension Works - One of Mr. T. A. Walker's (contractor) men, named John Kyley, employed on the above works, while superintending the unloading of a truck of Radyr stone, on Monday morning, was accidentally caught by the life-guard of the crane, and his leg was severely crushed. He was conveyed to the Cardiff Infirmary." Cardiff Times [019] 20th May 1882. "Penarth - Accidents. - On Tuesday a lad, named Henry Trout living at Cogan, and employed by Mr. Edmunds, contractor, was proceeding to his work along the line which leads to Llandough, when, turning to chat with some boys employed on the extension works, he stepped on the rails, and, not observing a train approaching, the locomotive passed over his foot, severely crushing it. He was conveyed to the Cardiff Infirmary, where his foot was amputated. On Tuesday, a man employed by Mr. Billupa, contractor, named James Woolay, was engaged laying prices of timber along the platform leading to a staithe now being rebuilt at Penarth Dock-and not noticing that he was so near the edge, he stepped backwards and fell a distance of 20 feet, alighting on some pieces of timber. He was found to be badly hurt, and was immediately taken to the Cardiff Infirmary." Cardiff Times [019] 25th November 1882. "Accident at Penarth Dock - About 11 a.m. on Tuesday, the 12 inst., a rigger named Gibson, when shipping the main topmast of the ship Arzilla, slipped and fell from the maintop onto the deck, a distance of about 70 feet, and sustained severe injuries, blood flowing from his mouth. He was promptly conveyed to his home in Plassey-street, Penarth, and a medical man sent for." Cardiff Times [019] 14th December 1882. "Accident - During the fog on Monday evening a brakesman named Richard Huckle met with an accident on the dock extension by some wagons coming into a siding which the thick fog prevented him from seeing. He sustained severe injuries to his legs, and was promptly carried home." Cardiff Times [019] 14th December 1882. "Penarth - Fatal Accident. - As a gang of men employed on the dock extension works were engaged with a crane in hoisting timber out of the dock, a baulk slipped out of the nippers and fell on a young man named Coombes, and he received such injuries that he died shortly after he was taken to his home in Cogan."
