1897 - The rather smart exhibition piece ten ton capacity coal wagon of Mr. Taylor of Penarth built, as the signage indicates, at the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. Ltd. in 1897. White walled tyres, shellac finish to the wood and some first-class sign-writing. The Cardiff and Suburban Commercial Directory [180] of 1891 - 1892 lists the Gloucester Wagon Company operating at the Docks, Penarth, whilst the Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Co. Ltd. is listed at East Moors. A further technological advancement was that it was equipped with hydraulic, or spring loaded buffers. The refinement considerably reduced impact damage during shunting operations and which only became compulsory on the T.V.R. c.1908. [031] [026] |
