1890- s.s. 'Solway Prince'

Another ship built at the yard of the Penarth Ship Building & Ship Repairing Company, Limited during 1890 was the s.s. Solway Prince.

The Solway Prince was first registered on 25th August 1890 under number 94034. The Mercantile Navy List for 1900 lists her with identification letters 'P.V.M.D.', her port of registry as Whitehaven and confirms that she was built in 1890 at Penarth Dock. She had an iron hull, was 145 ft. - 3 in. long x 23 ft. - 2 in. breath x 9 ft. - 0 in. depth of hold. Her net weight was 99 tons, 349 tons gross with 55 horsepower steam engines and screw propulsion. 1895 - Wreck of the Solway Prince - Safety of the Crew - 'A telegram is to hand stating that the Swansea trader, Solway Prince, from Briton Ferry to Belfast, has been sunk off Black Nob, Tara Bay. the masts are above water and the crew are safe. The last time the Solway Prince was at Swansea was in June. She is owned at Whitehaven, and her skipper is Capt. Moore. Her registered tonnage is 99, and her local broker Mr. Geo. Lennard, Cambrian-place.' - South Wales Daily Post - [361] [632] - 16th August 1895.
