Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .
Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - A technological development of great value to mariners of all nations . . .
The plaque at the church of St. Lawrence at Lavernock.
'1897 - 1947 - Near this spot the first radio messages were exchanged across water by Gugielmo Marconi and George Kemp between Lavernock & Flat Holm 11th May, Lavernock & Brean Down, 18th May 1897. Erected by the Rotary Club of Cardiff 1947.'

March 2025 - A visit with Julie to the church of St. Lawrence which is situated about 62 feet above sea level at the end of Fort Road, Lavernock, to view the plaque in the perimeter wall celebrating the events that since have undoubtedly saved innumerable lives at sea and elsewhere. The text of the plaque states :

'1897 - 1947 - Near this spot the first radio messages were exchanged across water by Gugielmo Marconi and George Kemp between Lavernock & Flat Holm 11th May, Lavernock & Brean Down, 18th May 1897. Erected by the Rotary Club of Cardiff 1947.'

I noted with interest an epitaph on the grave of Mr. Thomas David a "good runner" for the former Lavernock Fort and Battery which stated :

Though borrowed winds and Neptune's waves have tossed me too and fro
Yet now at last by God's decree, I harbour here below
But now at anchor here I lie, with many of my fleet,
But once again I must set sail, our Saviour Christ to meet.
