Volume One - Into the Victorian Age - Some newspaper reports from the 1880's

• January 1880 - Cardiff — 'The electric light was tried last month at the Taff Vale Station, with a view of introducing it to illuminate the docks. We are informed that the docks at Penarth will shortly be lighted by three or more lamps.' - The Electrician [1103] [499] 24th January 1880.

• February 1880 - "Large consignments of Spanish ore are coming to hand. One of 10,000 tons for Cyfartha is now in process of dispatch from Penarth by Taff Vale." - The Engineer [015] [499] 27th February 1880.

• June 1880 - Penarth - Fatal Accident - "An accident, which terminated fatally on Thursday, occurred at Penarth Dock on Wednesday to a ship carpenter named Philip Sage. Whilst at work upon a ship on the patent slipway, he accidentally fell off the stage to the bottom of the dock, and dislocated his spine. The poor fellow lingered until Thursday." Weekly Mail [067] 15th May 1880.

• June 1880 - Penarth - Fatal Accident - "A gang of men, employed by Mr. Billups, contractor, were discharging wagons of ballast on the Taff Vale Railway, forming new sidings, and had finished the set, One of the men named Martin Donovan, residing at Grangetown, found that he had left his pickaxe in a wagon, and got in again unobserved by the trainmen who started to move the train. The men and Mr. Fox, superintendent of the works, shouted to him to hold on to the side of the wagon, but it was too late, and he fell back and got underneath, the wheels passing over his head and arms, Death was instantaneous.
