• March 1893 - Fell Down The Hold - A Dutch Seaman Dies on Board the steamer Longhurst - "On Wednesday night, about eight o'clock, the commander of the steamer Longhurst, of Newcastle (Captain Andersen), after entering Penarth Dock reported the death of a Dutchman named Hendrich Peters, of Weimar, who fell down the vessel's hold early on Wednesday morning whilst the ship was in the Bristol Channel, on her way from Rotterdam. It appears that the deceased was nominally a passenger, although working his passage to Penarth in order to join the Batavia, now lying in Newport. The captain stated that he had ascertained from two fo'c'sle hands - Dutchmen - that they found the deceased in a state of unconsciousness and foaming at the mouth. Inspector Rutter caused the removal of the body to the mortuary." - Evening Express [135] [361] 8th March 1893.

• September 1893 - Bristol Brewery (Georges & Co.), Limited - . . . . Thomas, Radciffe, and Co., was passing up Penarth Harbour with a general cargo from Rotterdam she struck the No. 1 Tip as she was making for the Victoria Wharf of the South Wales Transit Company, and carried completely away the large shoot, throwing it bodily into the harbour.
