Penarth Dock Offices and Facilities - 1895
A section of the Taff Vale Railway schematic layout of plant and dock facilities. The area near the entrance to the dock is enlarged to show the various offices and functional maritime facilities. All that remains today is the former Customs House and the dock offices. The Marine Hotel had been closed down due to the slump in the coal trade by the 1920's and 1930's - an auction of the contents took place there in August 1917 at the expiry of the lease of William Hancock & Co, Ltd - even two nearly new beer-engines were up for sale!

Customs House Penarth Dock - 1895
Note the landing stage for the ferry which ran between Cardiff pier head and in summer, the Penarth beach. In the upper map we are able to see that the dockmaster resided close-by the dock at "The Ferns" - I believe Mr Pengelley was superceded by Samuel Thomas, the superintendent and dockmaster on his death in 1897. Mr. Pengelly was dockmaster in the years 1873 - 1897. He had a long and distinguished career at Penarth Dock. [247]
