Penarth Dock Offices and Facilities - 1895
A section of the Taff Vale Railway schematic layout of plant and harbour facilities at the Victoria Wharf. This was leased to the South Wales Public Wharf & Transit Company Limited and was known as the 'A' site. Down river, there are 6 coal tips, or staiths, and then the ballast crane. [247]

Grange Point - River Ely - Penarth Dock - 1895

An enlarged map further downstream showing the same company had its 'B' site warehousing near to the Railway Hotel which was a red brick pub frequented on occasions by myself! Sites 'C' and 'D' were situated at the iron ore wharf where the railway tracks veer off toward the Dowlais Iron and Steel works. The oil tanks, which were also under the control of the same company, became the petroleum storage facility which operated on the site under various companies until September 1985. The main group of railway lines continue on to Grangetown to join the line to Cardiff and beyond.

There was a hydraulic house for operation of the coal tips, the deputy harbour master's office and the coal tipping office adjacent to the site and beyond the tipping inspector's office and weighbridge. The subway was not yet built and the river was crossed by the chain ferry which ran on the course marked "steam ferry" at the lower right hand corner of the map, tides and weather permitting.
