• 1896 - 'Penarth Dock' - View of two sailing ships and coal wagons at Penarth Dock. Another photograph, taken on Christmas Eve 1896, showing activity at the north quay of Penarth Dock. Note the wonderful lines of the stern of a three masted barque and distant a four masted sailing vessel. The lower image has been colourised.

Also clear is part of the electric lighting system installed to permit nightime operation of the dock. However, during February of the previous year, the power generation plant for the lighting system was subject to a large fire. A newspaper report commented : 'The electric lighting plant, estimated to have cost about £1,500. belonged to J. D. Saunders and Co., Bute Docks, who maintained and worked the electric lighting for the dock company.' [194]

The original photograph is held within the archives of the National Museum of Wales and is reproduced with permission. [629] [Museum item number : 1993.86/8] [20180321]
