Oceana at Penarth Dock
Oceana at Penarth Dock

The 'Oceana' a four masted barque built at Sunderland in 1892 as the 'Mohan' and registered at Liverpool. She was 317' - 6" long x 44' - 2" breath of 2,873 Gross Register tons (2,747 NRT). Rigged with Royal sails over double top and top-gallant sails. This photo probably dates from 1904 - 1914 since she was sold to German owners in March 1900, renamed 'Oceana', was repainted in dry dock at Newport in October 1905, probably spent WWI interned in Antofagasta, Chile, South America, after the war she was delivered up by the Germans to Italy as war reparation and met her doom; broken up in Alicante in 1921-22. The lower image has been colourised.

She is seen here at Penarth Dock north quay. The Britannic coal wagons are at the quayside. The Britannic Methyr Colliery Company dates from 1904 and the pit was at Gilfach Goch. The building behind the bow is the main workshop of the Penarth Shipbuilding & Ship Repairing Company Limited. [249]
