Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .
Volume Two - The Era of Optimism, Investment & Development - Developments at the turn of the 20th century . .
'The Docks, Penarth' a view taken from a vantage point at the eastern end of the main dock. The photographer has captured the view from the top of the inclined dock wall showing stout timbers no doubt used as a slipway for ship repair. I am unsure what the item is to the left hand side of the image - possibly a buoy or floatation device of some description. At the right side is coal tip number fourteen and centre dock are a number of lighters or barges.[001]
This photo was taken just a few years prior to dock wall being made into a concrete block wall by the Taff Vale Railway Company to enable the pontoon and engineering works developments. The postcard was posted in December 1903 and is addressed 'Dear Baby'. He ends his note by asking 'If you can have your photo taken in your dress, don't forget me' - Isn't it reassuring to know that in over 100 years nothing has changed so far as men are concerned! [001]
