Penarth Dock and Basin c.1908

This c.1908 photograph is taken from the southern escarpment above the coal sidings. In this general view, the coal tips span the entire development of the dock to around 1908 with number 1 tip dating from 1865. Tip number 2 was replaced with an Armstrong steel tip in 1893. On the left of the photo we see tip number 19 built by Tannett Walker installed in 1905. In the basin are the four tips, numbers 15, 16, 17 and 18 built by Fielding & Platt and installed in 1899 - 1900. [000] [001]

The swing bridge across the locks between the basin and main dock can be clearly seen. The bridge is pivoted from the far side of the lock and rotated neatly into the recess in the quay wall to permit ships to pass through. That recess is still evident today (2019). The entrance to the subway (opened in 1900) is clear as are two accumulator towers which provided the instantaneous hydraulic power for the operation of the coal tips, swing bridge and lock gates.

Note the number of ships moored in the 'Penarth Flats' and 'The Patch'. This postcard, from my Penarth Dock Collection, was posted in Cardiff during March 1908. It is addressed to a Miss Parr at Barry and states 'Lovely weather today. If you wash my flannels this week it will come right for changing - don't forget brown clothes . . . Have you got dressed yet?' Julie calls it pushing your luck. Cheeky boy! [000] [001]

c.1908 - Penarth Docks - A hand tinted postcard view identical to the above. The explanations above suffice except to point out the vessel under repair upon the patent slipway of the Penarth Ship Building and Shiprepairing Company. A busy view of the dock and basin (not Docks!) and only a few years prior to the 1913 zenith of coal export activity. Another postcard held within the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20191104]
