upper images - This Valentine's Series colour postcard was posted in Penarth during December 1904 and was addressed to a Miss R Bevan residing at Llandaff, Cardiff. In the foreground is Cogan Station of the Barry Railway Company with its lovely pedestrian bridge built in the 1880's. It is of a wrought iron lattice girder construction with cast iron columns. It is quite a piece of engineering in my opinion as was made in Glasgow by the firm of George Smith, iron founders at their Sun Foundry. I used to admire the engineering expertise that went into its design and construction when I made the journey from Dinas Powys to Cogan by train with Mr. Ted Smith my apprentice instructor at the Penarth Dock Engineering Company Limited during the first year at the company. A postcard from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [024] |

An identical postcard, but in sepia tones posted in May 1906 also from Penarth to a Master Sayers in Middlesex. 'This is a view of the docks, but not a very good one I'm afraid. You would be most interested in here I am sure, there is a lot going on. I explored here in torrents of rain which did not succeed in dampening our ardor. Coaling is the chief industry.'
