Penarth Dock - c. 1912
Penarth Dock - A colourised postcard view date marked 1912 to an address in Antwerp, Belgium. No 2 coal tip was built by Armstrong & Company of Newcastle-on-Tyne and installed in 1893. An empty Powell Duffryn coal truck awaits transfer back to the colliery. The vessel moored against the northern quay wall is s.s. 'Meadowfield' of the Glasgow Navigation Company. She was captured by a German submarine en-route to the Clyde and sunk by gunfire during July 1915. The Germans continued shelling the vessel even they knew that there were women and children on board. However, only one life was lost. Another sad story of warfare but a fine heritage postcard from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] [20170922]
