Penarth Head from Cardiff Castle
The new tower at Cardiff Castle from an 1870's (colourised) engraving showing the tower and church of St. Augustines high above on Penarth Head in the background. It must have irritated the Bute dynasty immensely to know that the undertaking of the Penarth Dock, Harbour and Railway Company and the 'parent' Taff Vale Railway Company, which deprived the Marquis from considerable dues at his docks, was visible from his Cardiff home! [000]

Sir William Thomas Lewis, Bart., K.C.V.O., will not join the Taff Vale board. As announced in our columns of August last, he is definitely retiring.

These are the main lines of the agreement, but the full terms have not yet been arranged. This is especially the case in regard to the Rhymney Railway, the basis of the purchase value remaining outstanding. An official statement to this effect will probably be made.

There will, it is expected, be tremendous opposition to the proposals. The Barry Company and the freighters, and probably the Great Western, London and North Western, Midland, Brecon and Merthyr, and Alexandra Railway and Docks Companies are sure to very strongly oppose.
