Ferry - River Ely, Penarth

The old steam driven chain ferry was winched each way across the River Ely. Moveable coal tip number 15 is well advanced in its constuction by the engineers of Messrs. Fielding and Platt of Gloucester and some of the vertical columns of number 16 tip are also raised. The year of this image must surely be 1899. The days of the chain ferry are numbered since the Ely Subway was also under construction at this time. The four coal tips were commissioned and the Ely Subway fully opened during 1900. [007]
