A receipt for monies paid against an invoice for steam coal exported to France. The French was such an important market for the Powell Duffryn that by 1914 they had registered their Company as ‘Compagnie Francaise des Mines Powell Duffryn' with their head office at the city of Rouen.

This receipt from the Penarth Dock Collection [001] was issued at the 'Agence de Bordeaux' in 1908 and roughly translated states:- 'Received from Mr. E. Labarthe the sum of three hundred and fifty two Francs, 45 Centimes being the ammount of invoice number 474 dated this day.'

In 1863 Thomas Powell instructed T. E. Forster, William Armstrong and George Elliot to put a valuation on all his collieries. In the same year Powell died. George Elliot formed the Powell Duffryn Steam Coal Company Limited in 1864 for the purpose of working the whole of Thomas Powell's collieries. The company was registered on 28 July 1864. [016]
