Volume Two - The Era of Optimism, Investment & Development - Some newspaper reports from the 1900's . . . By Clause 3 power is sought to grant leases and licences to any company for carrying out any of the purposes mentioned in Clause 2 ; and by Clauses 4, 5 and 6 agreements are sought to be authorised between the company and the Penarth Shipbuilding and Shiprepairing Company, Limited. These agreements may provide "for the subscription by the company of all or any part of the capital of the limited company and the guarantee by the company of the dividends or interest on such capital or any part thereof, and for the nomination or appointment by the company of directors of the limited company." Cardiff Times [019] 28th December 1907. • February 1909 - Brave Penarth Fireman - "Mr Frederick Jones (deputy coroner), held an inquest at Cardiff on Tuesday on Hy. Preston (51), of Langton-street, Bristol, who was drowned in the Penarth Dock, having fallen between the quay wall and the steamer Camrose on Saturday. Wilfred Hayner, fireman on the Camrose, living at Glebe-street, Penarth, said he heard cries, and looking into the dock saw Preston's head and coat over the water, near the stern of the vessel. Witness at once dived in, and kept deceased afloat until a heaving line was thrown to them, and they were rescued by a small boat. Dr. J. Lewis (Seamen's Hospital) stated that death was due to shock following the immersion. Deceased smelt of drink. In reply to deceased's brother-in-law, the doctor said that if Preston had had one drink before falling into the dock he might possibly have smelt of drink when rescued. The jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence, and considered that the man should have stripped and wrapped in warm blankets before being removed to Cardiff. On the recommendation of the deputy-coroner they expressed their approval of Haynes' action, which they considered to be worthy of recognition." Cardiff Times [019] 6th February 1909. • July 1909 - Penarth Dock Royalties - "It was stated on Tuesday by Mr. Beasley, manager of the Taff Vale Railway, giving evidence before the Parliamentary Committee, that Lord Plymouth's predecessor, provided land for Penarth Dock valued at £17,850, depending on royalties for a return. Up to the end of last year those royalties had totalled £225,000, having been £9,363 during 1908, and over £10,000 during 1907." Cardiff Times [019] 24th July 1909. |
