The construction of the engineering works for the Penarth Pontoon, Slipway and Ship Repairing Company Limited was probably commenced shortly after the new vertical quay wall had been completed and the pontoon had been commissioned. The clock tower and offices were built directly over the new vertical dock wall. Under the clock was the board room, resplendent with its oak paneled walls, secret drinks cabinet and panoramic view over the activity at the works yard, the pontoon and dock. A wonderful remnant (plus a colourised version) from the Edwardian era which remained in tact and was often used for entertainment of guests to the company when Julie worked in the room adjacent in the 1960's. The construction works from the opposite end. Just behind the chimney was a small lathe when I was apprenticed there and I spent many happy hours turning production parts as well as making tools for use as an engineer and 'guvvy' jobs like a poker for the open fire at home complete with a polished lignum vitae handle! In the distance is an accumulator for one of the new steel coal tips, probably number 13. The railway line to the left of the building led into the main workshop and was still in place through the main yard of the works in the 1960's although the railways at the rear of the works had long since disappeared.
