Penarth Dock. Coal Tips 1920's
Coal tip no. 12 - Penarth Dock
Penarth Dock, Coal Tips - Another fine postcard from the Penarth Dock Collection. [001] The upper photograph shows coal tip nos. 12 and 11 and in the dock is a mix of sail and steam to collect coal for export sometime in the early to mid-1920's. The main hydraulic house is situated on the north side of the dock and the works of the Penarth Pontoon, Slipway & Ship Repairing Company Limited are clearly visible to the right hand side. A steamship is under repair upon the slipway - the incline as her stern dips away down the slipway confirms this. A selection of coal from the Lewis Merthyr Navigation Collieries Company Limited awaits tipping and the tippers of number 12 tip seem to be having five minutes rest, one leaning against a 10 or 12 ton truck upon the turntable. The headgear of the Lewis Merthyr Tymawr pit has pride of place at, and is a reminder of the past industry of South Wales, at the Rhondda Heritage Park. The enlargement has been colourised.
