| 1930 - Penarth Dock and Ely Tidal Harbour - An aerial photograph, with enlargement, taken just six years prior to the dock closing for the shipping of coals. The remaining, upgraded, coal tips are at the left and the near right. The swing bridge and a single lock gate are seen in the 60 feet wide lock between the basin and main dock with the Missions to Seamen building and entrance to the subway visible. The general cargo quay is at the right hand side of the dock and the pontoon is at the head of the dock awaiting the next vessel for repair. In the river Ely, the old slipway and gridiron are visible but probably, by this date, redundant. Over on the Cardiff side of the river, the quay and cranes of the Victoria Wharf are distant and the remaining coal tips await the next vessel for loading. Distant on the hillside is the meandering road connecting the 'Merrie Harrier' roundabout to Penarth Road ; a route I recall travelling upon in a Western Welsh, single decker, red bus, between Dinas Powis and Cardiff! The photograph is held within the National Museum of Wales. [629] |
