Frederick Riden

A family archive image of Frederick John Riden with wife Bessie b.1875 (nee Chapman) and first born, Winnifred, Florence; my Auntie Win born in February 1905. The second child, christened Mildred Anne is a sadly missed lady, she being my loving mother and an extremely accomplished pianist. [001]  The family lived at 158, Habershon Street, Cardiff according to the 1911 Census. [680] The Cardiff and Suburban Names Directory also lists Frederick John Riden residing at 6, Pearsons street, Roath, Cardiff.

Eldest brother, Peter, recalls that grandfather Fred was extremely strict and would not allow talking at the dinner table. Mum tells of one incident as a child when she tried to tell him that the piece of cabbage he was about to eat had a caterpillar on it. She was told to be quiet and watched whilst Fred devoured said cabbage complete with its wriggly guest!

Frederick John Riden
A photograph of grandfather Frederick John Riden who was born in November 1872 in the district of Bedminster, Bristol. I never met him as he passed away in April 1943 being before my birth in 1950. He is listed as being a Foreman Engine Fitter in the 1911 Census returns. [680] I was named after him and I'm very proud to have been Christened with the same middle name and to have played my part in the perpetuation of the engineering tradition of the family for at least two generations longer. Thanks Mum! [001]
