General aerial views of the basin and the eastern end of the Penarth Dock. The four most efficient coal hoists are situated at the north side of the basin in the top image taken in 1929. By 1937 the dock is closed and there are only two remaining in place in the basin plus numbers 19 and 20 on the northern quay of the main dock. The image shows the area of Penarth known as the "Bowery" which in former times had a area known as "Dagger Town". [089]

In the lower image, dating from 1937, the meanderings of the River Ely, (today filled with household waste) may be seen clearly. Also see Ferry Road, on the spit of land twixt sea and river. [089]
