Penarth Dock - c.1934

I believe this image dates from 1934 and was taken just prior to the closure of the docks in 1936. It clearly illustrates the extent and complexity of the sidings on the southern side of the dock to the coal tips which were still in place at that time.

Penarth Dock - track layout - 1940 - 1963

The track layout of British Railways Western Region is from the period 1940 - 1963 and is shown earlier. It states that all the sidings were removed on the southern side of the dock by 1955.

The static coal tips built by Messrs. Armstrong & Co. numbers 2, 8 and 10 are still in use and the older ones still in place. A tug appears to be taking on bunker coal at number 9 tip, since the chute looks to be lowered.

All the tips and their associated sidings were subsequently decommissioned by 1955 and the coal trade was over forever at Penarth. [030] [008]
