The "Kenilworth Castle" was a Castle Class Corvette, pendant number F420. She was in service from November 1943 during the war, and was laid-up at Penarth in the early 1950's, being sent to the breaker's yard in 1959. 1953 - Mothball Fleet - "The Royal Navy is to add to their reserve "moth-ball" feet in civilian docks this winter. Under the scheme, began a year ago, each ship is dehumidified and commercial firms look after the preservation of the hulls and paintwork, thus saving naval manpower. Throughout last winter ships ranging from destroyers to landing craft and mine sweepers were towed into civilian dockyards at the rate of two a week. Of the total of just over 100 already handed over, more than a third are at Cardiff, Penarth and Llanelly, with 27 at West Hartlepool, 21 at Barrow, and others at Lisahally and Greenock."
