A c.1961 photo of another Richards horizontal boring machine in the main shop. The casting is probably from one of the local steel works or possibly from the oil refineries further west. In the lower image of the same job, the steady is used to ensure concentricity of the bore when machining precision seatings for valves faces etc. The problem with this sort of work is actually monitoring the cutting operation and measuring the result due to limited access.
