Volume Four - An Era of Change, Uncertainty, Depression & War - The Penarth Dock Engineering Company Limited . . .

At the rear of the Penarth Dock Engineering Company works.
The view in May 1958 from the rear of the works of the Penarth Pontoon and Ship Repairing Company Limited. This was taken from nearby Cogan Junction signal box and shows the railway lines at the rear of the works running along to the southern quay and the left hand double track to the importation quays etc. on the southern quay of the dock. One of these tracks had points to service a line right into the workshop. The central area is the site of the main railway sidings to the coal tips which by 1955 had all been removed. To the right of this area is the former site of the Penarth Dock engine shed, opened in 1887 by the TVR and closed by the GWR in 1929. There were up to 20 engines housed on some occasions here according to the interesting book by Michael Hale, 'Steam in South Wales' [205]

Penarth Dock Engineering works.

A colourised close up of the Penarth Pontoon and Ship Repairing Company Limited with the chimney of the apprentice shop in the foreground. A ship's funnel may be seen through the yard but is not upon the pontoon since the pontoon is behind the left hand buildings and adjacent to the crane.

On the headland to the right of the head of the crane jib is the distinctive white facade of the Royal Hotel and the pathway leads down to the subway under the sidings and the dock offices. The railway lines to the left were still in place when I commenced my apprenticeship in 1966 but the single track to the right hand side of the works had been removed. To the right the joinery works of Price Brothers had been built and was a busy concern. [205]
