1970's - 80's - A view (with colourised version) down the unkempt yard of the Penarth Dock Engineering Company toward the dock. The dockside crane is still in position. On the left, the oil store is situated on the ground floor with the apprentice's mess room above and a doorway through to the classroom. On the left side, in front is the main stores on the ground floor, is where Mr Hopkins used to issue tools and fixings etc. Above is the engineer's canteen ; on the right at the far end the clock tower may just be seen and then the main machine workshop, the welding bay and the machine shop. A new roller shutter doorway has been added on the right and the yard has become a 'tip'. I date this photograph to the late 1970's or early 1980's when the company had been renamed to the Penarth Dock Engineering (1977) Company Limited. Clearly, the company had lost not only its way but its pride as well!
The original photograph is held at the archive of the National Museum of Wales and forms part of a series of 31 photos of engineering workshops at Penarth and Barry Docks. [Museum item number : 87.202I/3] [629] [20180326]
