c.1970's - A photograph of the apprentice shop at the Penarth Dock Engineering Company Limited taken when it was in use training the next generation of fitters and turners. The young man at the radial drill has clamped the workpiece to the bed of the drill and is drilling a pilot hole which will be followed by a larger diameter drill hopefully in the correct location and of the correct diameter!

The upper photo also shows the horizontal borer in use. The layout and machines are exactly the same as during the first year of my apprenticeship to fitting and turning commencing in March 1966.

The original photographs are held at the archive of the National Museum of Wales and form part of a series of 31 photos of engineering workshops at Penarth and Barry Docks. [Museum item number : 87.202I/21] [629] [20180327]
