1970s - 80s - A photograph (with colourised version) of the main machine shop with a steelworks bearing housing on the large planer bed. Another common job at the works, these bearing blocks were the main journals of the back-up roller from a four-high steel cold-rolling plant. Cold rolling steel gave a superior surface finish and closer thickness tolerance control than hot rolling. In the foreground is a horizontal boring machine.
The original photograph is held at the archive of the National Museum of Wales and forms part of a series of 31 photos of engineering workshops at Penarth and Barry Docks. [Museum item number : 87.202I/25] [629] [20180329]
