1970's - 80's - The large Noble and Lund centre-lathe installed within the main machine shop at the Penarth Dock Engineering Company Limited. The lower image provides an idea of the sheer scale of this lathe and the workpieces it was capable of processing. The drum is held in the four jaw chuck at the drive end. As it rotates it is supported at the remote end by a revolving centre. At the end of the bed, in the upper image, a three point fixed steady is parked. This steady permitted workpieces to be supported whilst they were being turned on their external diameter, their end face or to permit the machining of an internal bore.
The original photograph is held at the archive of the National Museum of Wales and forms part of a series of 31 photos of engineering workshops at Penarth and Barry Docks. [Museum item number : 87.202I/30] [629] [20180329]
