Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Five - The Age of Decline & Crass Stupidity - What happened after the docks closed? . . .

1974 - Penarth Dock Basin
1974 - (above and below) - A September view of the Penarth Dock Basin from the escarpment above and a lovely view through the Basin and sea lock. At this date the inner lock between the basin and main Penarth Dock has been dammed off, the swing bridge scrapped and a roadway over the dam has been built. A JCB excavator is at work nearby. The Queen Alexandra Dock and its sealock at Cardiff is clear distant across the 'Penarth Flats' and the 'Patch'. [048] [634] [635] [20180216]

1979 - The Penarth Dock Basin and former sea lock.

1979 - (above) - The Penarth Dock Basin and former sea lock where silting-up of the entrance and the basin generally is rather pronounced. This lovely photograph was taken during August 1979. Distant is the Customs House with its fine clock tower. Another of the photographs from the archive of the amazing late Dr. Mary Gillham M.B.E. [048] [634] [635] [20180216]

1984 - A Maytime high tide at the Penarth Dock Basin.

1984 - (above) - A fine day in May and it's high tide at the Penarth Dock Basin. Leisure craft use the safe harbour although some working boats are also apparent. The photograph is taken from the roadway across the lock between the main dock. Again we are indebted to the late Dr. Mary Gillham M.B.E. for her record of our maritime heritage during her conservation work. [048] [634] [635] [20180216]

Once again, many thanks to Alan Reeve at the South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre (SEWBReC) - www.sewbrec.org.uk - for permission to use these images on the Penarth Dock website.
