1979 - The upper section (above the dam) of the Penarth Dock filled with household waste. The Penarth Dock Engineering Company situated at the head of the dock is still in operation and the relics of its former role as a ship repairer include the Victorian three-legged dockside crane, (brought over from the River Ely slipway site c.1910) the pumping house (c.1890) and the single storey buildings which served the former floating dock or pontoon. Another of the photographs from the archive of the amazing late Dr. Mary Gillham M.B.E. [048] [634] [635] [20180216]

Many thanks to Alan Reeve at the South East Wales Biodiversity Records Centre (SEWBReC) - www.sewbrec.org.uk - for permission to use this image on the Penarth Dock website.

1984 – The revised OS map [010] [398] with basin and dock dammed off plus the extent of landfill at that time. The basin is tidal and some new industrial units have been built along the northern side of the dock.
