April 1969 - An ariel view of Penarth Dock and the Ely Tidal Harbour reveals the extent of the dam under construction. If only they knew that the pontoon is only a few feet in front of them and that they are about to bury it!

As explained elsewhere, I was apprenticed to fitting and turning at the Penarth Dock Engineering Company who's works is at the head of the dock. After a year at the apprentice school, I was sent to a sister company, Hodges Engineering at Barry Dock for three years. I returned to Penarth about the same time that this photograph was taken and worked in the drawing office which had been set up on the first floor of the building which was built upon stilts in the ooze of the River Ely as shown in the lower enlargement.

The photograph is the work of local photographer Terrence Soames (Cardiff) Limited, is entitled 'Aerial view of Price Bros. works, Penarth' and is held at Amgueddfa Cymru / National Museum of Wales. [629] [Museum item number : 2019.1/101] [20190831]
