River Ely - chain ferry - 1899
River Ely - chain ferry - 1899
A lovely photograph (with colourised version) of the chain ferry taken in 1899 during the construction of the four moveable coal tips at the basin. The roof, gable ends and chimney of the Mission to Seamen (Seamen's Reading Rooms) are also clear. A new embankment was authorised on the 11th January 1899 which was indicated in the TVR track layout plans which significantly changed the river bank effectively burying the timber supports shown in the distance. This noticeable dip in the embankment was due to the pill or inlet called Cwtch-y-Cwm and will be dealt with in more detail later in the chapter. [007]

The OS map of 1880 showing the route of the "Penarth Ferry" across the river Ely. The jetty on the southern shore is indicated but the jetty seen in the image above is not indicated for some reason. [010]
