A lovely photograph (with colourised version) of the chain ferry taken in 1899 during the construction of the four moveable coal tips at the basin. The roof, gable ends and chimney of the Mission to Seamen (Seamen's Reading Rooms) are also clear. A new embankment was authorised on the 11th January 1899 which was indicated in the TVR track layout plans which significantly changed the river bank effectively burying the timber supports shown in the distance. This noticeable dip in the embankment was due to the pill or inlet called Cwtch-y-Cwm and will be dealt with in more detail later in the chapter.
