The River Ely ferry crossing 1898
The River Ely ferry crossing 1898
A photograph (with colourised version) of the chain ferry taken in 1898 looking back toward the end of Ferry Road or the Grange Point side of the river Ely. In the distance is the chain ferry awaiting passengers at the jetty. It's low water and the extent of the mud provides an indication of the sheer range of the tidal rise and fall that the ferry had to operation in. I wonder how many people slipped on the jetties on a rainy day? Then on a windy day with a good swell . . . [002]
