Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - The subway under the river Ely story . . .

1897 on the northern, Ferry Road, side of the river Ely showing the entrance to the first sections of subway entering the ground

A photograph taken on the 23rd August 1897 on the northern, Ferry Road, side of the river Ely showing the entrance to the first sections of subway entering the ground. The cast iron segments and method of bolting them together to form a ring is clear as is the manner in which each ring is bolted to the next and so on. The railway transports segments to the tunneling shield and on the return journey brings spoil out for tipping.

The photograph is taken from a series of six held within the archives of the National Museum of Wales and is reproduced with permission. [629] [Museum item number : 70.102I/2] [20180323]
