1898 - River Ely Subway - Penarth
Another view of the shield at the air lock behind which excavation of the face in the heading was on-going. The photograph was taken during April 1898. [009] [060]

Inside the tunnel - River Ely subway - Penarth

A posed photograph demonstrating the method of hauling the segments through the subway to the shield on a bogie using a rope and block. Why? They were heavy - each segment weighed approx. 6 hundredweight or cwt. (112 lbs = 1 cwt and 20 cwt =1 imperial ton) i.e. 300 Kg. [009] [060]

If the images look a little washed out it is because I lightened both images to provide more of the detail which is lost in the darkened environment of the shield!
