Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - The subway under the river Ely story . . .

Below, a view of the subway toll house on the northern shore of the river Ely during March 1898 when they are slating the roof. A roofer is at work in front of the chimney and unguarded scaffolding surrounds the building. The railway, with a small truck, are used for the removal of spoil and in the subway the electric lighting may be seen falling away into the deep! The image is included in John Hutton's wonderful 'Taff Vale Miscellany' book. [030] [060]
