Below, a view of the subway toll house on the northern shore of the river Ely during March 1898 when they are slating the roof. A roofer is at work in front of the chimney and unguarded scaffolding surrounds the building. The railway, with a small truck, are used for the removal of spoil and in the subway the electric lighting may be seen falling away into the deep!
