Penarth Dock, South Wales - 150 years - the heritage and legacy
Penarth Dock, South Wales - the heritage & legacy . . .

Volume Six - Pre-Victorian to the Present Day - Select Aspects - The subway under the river Ely story . . .

This Subway. Constructed under the express Authority of Parliament. By TheTaff Vale Railway Company.

This plaque commemorated the Subway below the River Ely. I recall that it was fixed upon the wall of one of the entrance buildings against a ceramic tiled dark green border with a white background. As my memory fails me, can anyone confirm which side of the river it was placed? The text of the plaque states :

This Subway.
Constructed under the express Authority of Parliament
(59 & 60 VIC. CAP. 233)

By The
Taff Vale Railway Company,
Was Commenced on the 5th July 1897, and Completed and
Opened for Public Traffic, on the 14th May 1900.

George Thomas Sibbering, M. Inst. Civil Engineer.
Thomas Taylor Contractor.

Many thanks to David Ings, [655] the Welsh Railway Research Circle [737] and myself for deciphering the text!
